Samu Karlsson joins Infrakit as a BIM Manager

Hello everybody! My name is Samu, and I have worked as a BIM manager in the Services team since the start of February. I have a Master of Science degree in Geoengineering from Aalto University. The focus of my studies consisted of rock and foundation engineering with additional geology and geophysics studies on the side.

I have an extensive soon 25-year history of working in both civil and mechanical engineering industry. While living in the USA for 8 years, I worked for Metso Minerals at the North American headquarters. I supervised a team of engineers responsible for the design, parametric 3D-models and manufacturing drawings of crushers, screens and conveyors for quarries. I provided both internal as well as international training for implementation of advanced modelling techniques and oversaw development of new methods for producing quality deliverables.

After returning to Finland, I worked nearly 9 years at A-Insinöörit in a department specializing in tunnels and underground structures. In my position my expertise was managing BIM development and organizing team and project support related to design and modeling issues. I am a well-versed user of several software packages. In addition, my duties included writing of manuals, offering hands-on training and refining information management processes.

In my free time my wife and I enjoy exploring the world and spending time outdoors. I enjoy travelling, hiking, photography and music in various forms. I recently rediscovered and reignited my passion for playing guitar.

At Infrakit my duties include product and process development, customer support, improving data transfer between design applications and involvement in international operations. I am immensely excited to work with a team of seasoned experts with a passionate drive! I am convinced that we have a platform and provide services that enable collaboration between infra professionals in a way that will ultimately reform the landscape of infra construction – worldwide.

Olli Planting joins Infrakit as a Development Manager

Olli Planting joins Infrakit as a Development Manager

Hi there, I’m Olli. I joined Team Infrakit about a month ago as a Development Manager. I have a bachelor’s degree on Civil Engineering from Oulu University of Applied Sciences. I’m originally from Sodankylä which is a small town in northern Finland. Now I live in Oulu, but my heart is in Lapland where I enjoy spending time at our cabin in the middle-of-nowhere. I love fishing and spending time in the nature. I also enjoy cooking, cycling, yoga and badminton.

Before Infrakit I worked for almost nine years at Destia Ltd. in the infra sector. My career at Destia included working as a land surveyor, road designer, leading infra designer and BIM coordinator. The last three years I also worked as a development manager in the design team. As a development manager I led design processes and software development and my own development team. Now at Infrakit my specialty is collaboration, development and quality assurance in infrastructure design and construction projects.

Infrakit is very familiar to me since I started to develop it from a designers’ point of view in 2013 at Destia. I’ve worked closely with Infrakit specialists for over eight years so jumping into the team was easy to me. I look forward to pushing the limits of infrastructure sector’s effectiveness and quality as a member of Team Infrakit.

Extensive road construction site in Mustasaari, Finland, is progressing rapidly– roadways may become available for traffic as early as this year

Extensive road construction site in Mustasaari, Finland, is progressing rapidly– roadways may become available for traffic as early as this year

The construction of the approximately 2.5-kilometer long four-line road (between Vassor and Vöyri Kärklax in Mustasaari, Finland) started in August 2020. The extensive road construction site is progressing rapidly – new lanes may already be driven in the autumn. Infrakit is used in the project.

A lot has been done in six months, says project manager Veijo Rajamäki from the ELY Center for YLE (17.2.2021). The main contractor in the project is Sundström Oy from Pedersörel. According to Sundström, the work got off to a good start in October and there have been no major surprises or delays. Off-road sections are currently being worked on.

Work has only been done on site for half a year, but the project is already well ahead of schedule.

Project manager Veijo Rajamäki says that completion is originally scheduled for the summer of 2022, but the situation has changed. Now it seems that they are able to cover the carriageways already in the middle of this year, possibly in the autumn. As a result, roadways may become available for traffic as early as this year.

The cost estimate for the road section is 9.8 million euros. On top of that comes the design costs. They bring the total to eleven million euros. According to Veijo Rajamäki the budget is not exceeded. (YLE 17.2.2021.)

Infrakit user experience in Estonia from the owner’s point of view

Infrakit user experience in Estonia from the owner’s point of view

By Ingmar Aija, Infrakit OÜ

Estonian Transport Administration has been piloting for the third year with different BIM/CDE software solution. Infrakit cloud service is among them and has been in use every year in different projects.

There is a progress with every new pilot project. New ideas and methods are coming up on how to implement Infrakit into daily use and how to speed up the process with next projects.

We have asked, Kadi Tuum who is the construction project manager in the Estonian Transport Administration, feedback on how they have used and what benefits they see in using Infrakit today and in future projects.

Kadi Tuum says that from the owner’s point of view, it is very convenient to be able to record the problems that have arisen on the map with the route during the whole construction period. This makes it much easier to identify the causes of defects and resolve disputes during the warranty period.

Together with the site engineer we use the option to take pictures and insert notes on site using our phones or tablets. This option is convenient, later in the office you can immediately show the notes to the other parties on the map together with the image material and location, and if necessary, summarize and download all the notes. For example, we had problems with the quality of the lower asphalt surface. I asked the site engineer to register all the places in Infrakit with a picture, where the lower asphalt pavement had defects. After few years when the top asphalt might have defects, it’s easy for me to inspect the site using Infrakit Field app to disassemble the situation that was at this particular location.

Viewing models in a simple environment is also a good option and is used by the site engineer to perform control calculations. This allows us to perform surveillance and controlling measurements in the same environment as contractors.

As a conclusion Kadi said that she would like to see Infrakit eventually as one common data environment (CDE) where whole project management can be done in one place. Today some of document management routines still need to be done outside of Infrakit. As the construction is still ongoing, they will make final conclusions in the end of the process.
